Obituary for Betty Jean Grant

Betty Grant passed away at her residence on Camp Ground Road in Luverne on Jan. 21st, 2021 at the age of 87. She was preceded in her death by husband Shaphan. Betty resided in Dothan for a number of years prior to her moving to the family farm in 2015. Private graveside services were held on Jan. 22nd at Camp Ground Road United Methodist Church cemetery with Skeen Funeral Home of Troy directing. She was buried alongside her husband. She is survived by her son Russ and lots of friends in Sylacauga, Columbia, and Dothan as well as her friend and caregiver, Dorothy Dorsey of Luverne. Betty was born on December 30th, 1933 and grew up in Sylacauga. She moved around after her marriage to Shaphan and never met a stranger. Betty was a caregiver herself often helping someone get to a doctor's appointment, pick up groceries or visiting with shut-ins. Over the years Betty gave gallons of her Blood to the American Red Cross. She assisted the Alzheimer's Resource Center in their "Walk to Remember" for a number of years. She served on their Advisory Committee for a Walk to Remember as well as assisted in raising funds for the event. Betty became associated with Alfred Saliba Realty in 1980 and remained an active member of the Dothan Realtor's Association until her retirement in 2015. While a member of the local Realtor's association, she served on a number of committees and was President of the Association in 1988. Betty received the distinguished Silver Cup Award in 2007 and in 2016 the local association named the Cup in her honor, The Betty Grant Silver Cup Award. Betty and Shaphan were active members of Covenant United Methodist Church up until her moving to Luverne. Betty's friendship is cherished and loved by many, especially those at Alfred Saliba Realty where she was often referred to as "Mom." Betty is happy to be reunited with the love of her life, Shaphan.
